2023 Summer Research Internship at Massachusetts General Hospital

Ms. Jihra James, a LU Chemistry major, has been awarded one of the 20 allotted slots  on the  Massachusetts General Hospital Summer Research Trainee Program (MGH SRTP).

Each student is assigned to a specific MGH laboratory, clinical site, health policy, or health services research area where they undertake an original research project under the mentorship and guidance of a Mass General Hospital (MGH) investigator. Assignments are carefully considered and are made with the student’s research and career interests in mind. In addition to this unique research experience, students will gain knowledge through weekly seminars at MGH, attend career development workshops and networking events, and have opportunities for clinical shadowing.  

Research presentation at Oklahoma Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation: September 30 – October 1, 2022

Dr. Sharon Lewis (Chemistry Department) accompanied 21 LU STEM students to present research projects at the OK-LSAMP [Oklahoma Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation] 28th Annual Research Symposium in Stillwater, OK.

Four (4) students won awards:

  1. Mchogany McKnight – 1st Place poster, Life Sciences
  2. J’Taelii Heath – 2nd Place Poster, Life Sciences
  3. Charles Lett – 2nd Place Poster, Non-Life Science
  4. Kyla Stembridge – 3rd Place Oral Presentation, Non-Life Sciences
2022 - Research presentation at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science

Dr. Sharon Lewis accompanied 5 LU STEM students to present research projects at the SACNAS [Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science.], in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Charles Lett, computer science major, won Poster presentation: Computer &Information Sciences.

Summer 2022 2023 Summer Research Internship at Massachusetts General Hospital

LU Chemistry major Bre Wright was one of 30 students out of a pool of 500 applicants nationwide that secured an internship at Harvard’s Mass General Hospital, Boston, MA. 

OMRF Collaborative Agreement with LU

The OMRF [Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation] has a Collaborative Agreement with LU.  LU Biology & Chemistry students get training in research projects during a 10 week period in the summer and continue on the LU campus [SRI facility] during the Academic year.

Published article - Case Study: How Langston University's LINC program contributed to diversity in the next generation of chemists

An article written by LU Chemistry Professor and Department chair, John K. Coleman, PhD was published in the magazine “Current Research in Materials Chemistry” . The article’s  title is “Case Study: How Langston University’s LINC Program Contributed to Diversity in the Next Generation of Chemists, Medical Personnel and other Highly Trained STEM Professionals”. 

This article explores the strategies and processes used to enable LU to “punch above its weight”,  producing a disproportionate number of STEM graduate who successfully pursued advanced STEM and medical degrees.
