Your Personal Statement

A Personal Statement is a requirement for most undergraduate scholarship or special program applications, as well as for application to  most professional degree programs. Professional schools such as medicine, dentistry, other health programs require a Personal Statement. Many colleges require a personal essay as part of their application process.

What is a Personal Statement?

A personal statement is an overview of accomplishments, talents, interests, and objectives that are relevant to what you are seeking. It is the chance for you to make your best case regarding why you should receive a scholarship, be admitted to a special program, or some other goal you are seeking. It is also an opportunity to explain how factors outside your school environment have enhanced or impeded your accomplishments, including how you managed the impact.

How to Write a Personal Statement

There is a lot of information on how to write a personal statement. UC Davis (https://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/scholarships/tips/personal) has information that can help you get started. An article at this site lists some key content for your personal statement:

  1. Start on your personal statement early.
  2. Be clear. Be focused. Be organized.
  3. Get personal.
  4. Make it authentic.
  5. Be careful with humor and clichés.
  6. Be reflective.
  7. Use specific examples to illustrate your ideas.
  8. Finally, give yourself plenty of time for revisions.

RESUME PREPARATION

Everyone has need for a well-written resume. An article at collegevine.com recommends that you start working on your resume as soon as possible, and we agree.  A resume is not just a document presented as a requirement for applying for a job. It is a 1-2 page word picture that showcases your strengths and greatest accomplishments. If presents a well-crafted image of the skills and personal qualities that  you can offer to a job, program, organization, or any other position.

If you’ve never had a job, you might struggle with what to include on a resume. You should think more broadly than you work experience, as you have probably gained invaluable insights and skills from your volunteer work, leadership roles, hobbies, and extracurricular activities.

You should carefully review the requirements of the position you are applying for. When completing your resume use some of the keywords included in the position requirements (if true). This information would generally be included in the Work Experience section of your resume.

Here how some previous LU STEM scholars described their experiences as tutors and student researchers on their resumes.

Your faculty mentor will probably suggest that you apply to a number of venues where students’ research work is presented to a regional or national audience. The quality of your Abstract will impact whether your work is accepted for presentation.  This link will connect you with Abstracts of work by previous LU STEM scholars, and will help you with your own.
